Welcome to Life Is Legal…and Why I Started This Podcast
There’s a moment I’ve watched play out hundreds of times in my legal career.
Someone sits across from me — smart, capable, responsible — and says some version of:
“I had no idea.”
No idea that there was a deadline.
No idea that one missing form changed everything.
No idea that the law quietly made a decision for them because they didn’t make one first.
That moment — that gap between what people think the law does and what it actually does — is why I started the “Life Is Legal” podcast.
If you listened to the first episode of the podcast, you heard the story that finally pushed me over the edge into doing this work publicly . But the truth is, that story wasn’t unique. It was just the clearest example of a problem I’ve seen for 25 years.
The Law Is Everywhere — The Explanations Are Not
Here’s the quiet truth: the law touches almost every corner of your life.
It’s in:
your job offer and your employee handbook
your lease and your security deposit
your Venmo jokes and your group-text screenshots
your marriage, your breakup, your kids, your parents
your side hustle, your credit card, your medical records
and yes — eventually, your death
And yet, most people are expected to navigate all of that with almost no usable information. Not because they’re careless. Not because they’re irresponsible. But because no one teaches this stuff.
Instead, the law shows up after something goes wrong — as a bill, a lawsuit, a denial, a mess. Life Is Legal exists to flip that script.
This Is Not About Making You a Lawyer
Let me be very clear about what this podcast is not.
It is not:
a law school lecture
a collection of case citations
a “gotcha” show designed to scare you
or a place where I talk down to you
You do not need to become a lawyer to live a legally safer life.
You just need:
better questions
earlier information
and a basic understanding of how the rules actually work
That’s it.
What You’ll Get Here
Each episode of Life Is Legal takes one slice of real life — something you’re likely to encounter eventually — and answers three questions:
What does the law actually say about this?
What do people usually get wrong?
What can you do before it costs you time, money, or peace of mind?
We’ll talk about things like:
what really happens when you turn 18
why one missing beneficiary form can undo an entire estate plan
when recording a conversation is legal — and when it’s a crime
why “we’re amicable” is not a legal strategy
and how a single paragraph on a piece of paper can save a family years of pain
Sometimes it’ll just be you and me, a cup of coffee, and my two slightly dramatic dogs.
Sometimes I’ll bring in experts and guests who’ve been on the front lines — lawyers, judges, doctors, financial planners, and people who’ve lived through something hard and learned from it.
And yes — we will laugh. Because if we can’t laugh at the absurdity of some of this, we’ll lose our minds.
Welcome to Life Is Legal.
